In the Year of Light

Alex Vogt, CEO of Optics Balzers: It’s hard to imagine the modern world without photonics, the combination of light and electronics.

In the Year of Light

Photonics, the high-tech industry for innovative lighting, counts among the key technologies of the future. Optics Balzers is a hidden champion at the forefront of technological progress.

We are all surrounded by technical equipment that is based on laser and optical technologies, for example, in cars, microcameras, mobile phones, … “It’s hard to imagine the modern world without photonics”, says Alex Vogt, CEO of Optics Balzers AG. The company’s core competence is the development and production of high-precision thin-film optical coatings. At the same time, the innovative hidden champion is a sought-after partner for product developments and the production of optical components.

“We pick up new market and technological trends on our radar long before they happen and we are responsive to our customers’ needs.”

The CEO reveals how they succeed in asserting themselves as a leading global supplier for the photonics industry: “We pick up new market and technological trends on our radar long before they happen and we are responsive to our customers’ needs”. Photonics has a huge economic potential as a key technology of the 21st century. It triggers innovation so that such challenges as climate change, health issues, a clean environment, mobility and security can be overcome. It is no coincidence that UNESCO declared 2015 as the “International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies”.

Optics Balzers delivers the optical coatings that transform light into a high-tech tool in numerous areas: in ophthalmology, aeroplane cockpits, 3D cinemas, for gesture recognition, distance measuring in cars, security systems or in satellite cameras. The thin-film coatings are 500 times thinner than a human hair. They direct, mirror, filter and reflect the colours of the incoming light like the wings of a butterfly.

A total of 140 experts work in Balzers, Liechtenstein and in Jena, the City of Lights. Since 2010 Optics Balzers’ German high-tech location has specialized in thin-film coatings, among other products, for the aviation and aerospace industries. And what role does LLB play? CEO Alex Vogt sums up the relationship with the main bank of the company in four words: “We know each other”. The bank understands what it takes to be a market leader through innovation in a dynamic business environment.
